Community Outreach
We are not a church that soley focuses on its own members and those who regularly attend. We are a church family built on community, a community that extends far beyond our doors to people who may have some sort of tie to the church or none at all. Everyone is accepted and welcomed at the Allegan UMC. Even if people do not attend any church or attend elsewhere, we are always ready to lend a helping hand and prayers.
For those who are unable to make it to church due to physical conditons or hardships, the church pastor and various members often make visits to shut-ins in homes, nursing homes, and hospitals.
For the young adults in our congregation who are away at colleges, universities, and military trainings around the country, we assemble care packages twice a year.
Our Prayer Chain and the Joys and Concerns segment of the Sunday service our another way in which the Allegan UMC reaches out to anyone. In Christian fellowship, we share our clebrations, sorrows, worries and expereinces. We focus on the community, friends and accquiantances, and not just the congregation.
Sharing the Building
A large part of Christian love and friendship is sharing with others. Accordingly, our building is often used by other groups and organizations for meetings and events.
The Allegan County Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired meets in our Fellowship Hall on the last Thursday of every month at 10:30 a.m. Thier purpose is to provide education, encouragement and emotional support for adults who are experiencing vision decline or loss of sight.
Our Kitchen and Fellowship Hall are also used by The Lions Club for their Pancake Dinners.
Collections for the Community
We collect various items and funds for worthy causes, organizations, and schools in our community such as:
- Food on the first Sunday of each month for those in need. (or anytime people are willing to give!)
- Village Market sales slips for the Allegan Public Schools
- Pennies and Change for various projects. All those coins really add up if everyone brings some!
- Pop can tabs for the Grand Rapids Community House.
- Yoplait yogurt lids for breast cancer research.
- Used eyeglasses for the Lions Club.
- Campbell soup labels for our local schools.
- General Mills "Box Tops for Education" for our local schools.
- Pop bottles for Gepff Spohn's Karate Ministry
